POLICE CAUTION SOWORE, OTHERS AGAINST PROTESTS OVER LAGOS DEMOLITIONS
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, has cautioned activist Omoyele Sowore and other groups against organising protests in reaction to recent demolition exercises across the state.
Speaking to journalists on Monday at the Iyana-Oworo section of the Third Mainland Bridge, Jimoh disclosed that the command had deployed security personnel across major parts of the city to prevent any form of demonstration that could lead to unrest.
He stated that the police would not condone any attempt to obstruct major roads or disturb the peace currently being maintained in Lagos.
“We are warning Sowore and his group to steer clear of Lagos or be ready to face the full consequences of the law. The Third Mainland Bridge is a vital route for the Nigerian economy and the protection of lives and property. Blocking it would endanger thousands of people who rely on it daily for their livelihood and emergencies,” he said.
The commissioner added that police officers had been stationed at key locations, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Maryland, Ojota, Gani Fawehinmi Park, Gbagada, Bariga, and the Lekki Toll Gate, to maintain law and order.
According to him, while the Constitution upholds the right to free expression and peaceful assembly, such activities must adhere to legal procedures and respect the rights of other citizens.
“Anyone intending to hold a peaceful protest must comply with established guidelines. What we’ve witnessed recently are not genuine protests but attempts to disturb public peace. Those involved will face the law,” he warned.
Addressing the recent demolition in Oworonshoki, Jimoh defended the government’s action, describing the demolished structures as illegal and frequently used by criminals as hideouts.
“These areas served as bases for criminal operations targeting innocent residents. The government acted rightly by clearing them. Genuine occupants have been compensated, as confirmed by recent media reports,” he said.
He further accused some individuals of attempting to exploit the situation for political or criminal motives, warning that the police would not allow anyone to hide under activism to cause chaos.
“Anyone using activism as a cover to incite violence is part of a criminal conspiracy, and we will not tolerate that,” Jimoh declared.
He assured residents of their safety, urging them to continue their normal activities without fear.
“Every Nigerian deserves security, safety, and freedom of movement. We will keep ensuring Lagos remains peaceful, but we will not condone any criminal activity disguised as protest,” he said.
