POLICE ARREST BAYELSA UNIVERSITY STUDENT OVER VIRAL ASSAULT VIDEO
A shocking video showing the assault and humiliation of a young woman in Bayelsa State has sparked outrage and led to the arrest of a student at the Federal University, Otuoke (FUO).
The disturbing footage, which surfaced on Sunday via a Facebook page, showed three young women repeatedly slapping, punching, and accusing a victim identified as Nancy of having an affair with their alleged lover. In the clip, the attackers went as far as stripping her naked and cutting off her braids with a sharp object.
Police operatives from Zone 16, with support from FUO security personnel, arrested the prime suspect, identified as Kadi, a Social Work student at the university. Authorities confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down the other accomplices involved.
The video has drawn strong condemnation from Gender-Based Violence (GBV) advocates. In a joint statement, the Association of Women Against Gender-Based Violence and the Do Foundation, led by Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy Harry, described the act as “sad and embarrassing.”
“This is not what we expect from young women who should be responsible and law-abiding citizens. Such shameful exhibition of violence raises serious criminal issues, including assault, threat to life, and cybercrime,” the statement read.
The groups also urged the police to ensure a thorough investigation and called on the victim, Nancy, to cooperate fully with law enforcement so justice can be served.
This incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for more awareness and enforcement of laws against gender-based violence and cyberbullying in Nigeria.
