The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old woman in the Oke Sopen area of Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at a residence in the Odo Idi Scale area of Oke Sopen. According to the police, the victim’s mother formally reported the matter at the Ijebu-Igbo Divisional Police Station on Tuesday, September 1, at about 10:10 a.m., prompting officers to begin an investigation.

The victim, whose identity has been withheld, alleged that she had gone to collect a key from someone in the area when two men allegedly dragged her into a building. She identified one of the men as someone she knew and said she did not know the second individual.

Following the complaint, police officers visited and secured the location where the alleged incident took place as part of efforts to gather evidence. The victim was also issued a police medical examination form and taken to a hospital for medical assessment and care.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, Opeyemi Oluborode, confirmed that detectives subsequently tracked down one of the suspects. He identified the arrested man as Ayomide Kamula, 20, who is currently being held by the police and questioned as investigations continue.

Police said another alleged participant, identified as Boye Balogun, remains at large. The command said an intensive search had been launched to locate and arrest him so that he can face investigation over his alleged involvement in the incident.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. Authorities are expected to examine the available evidence, including the outcome of the victim’s medical examination, statements from those involved and other information gathered during the investigation.

The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, said the command maintains a zero-tolerance position towards sexual offences and gender-based violence. He assured the victim’s family that the investigation would be conducted discreetly and thoroughly.

The police also said efforts would continue to ensure that the fleeing suspect is apprehended. However, the allegations remain subject to investigation, and the arrest of a suspect does not in itself establish criminal guilt.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the need for effective responses to sexual and gender-based violence, including prompt reporting, access to medical care, protection for survivors and proper investigation of alleged offenders.
