PHYSICIAN, HEAL THYSELF – MAHDI SHEHU SLAMS TRUMP OVER ‘DEFEND CHRISTIANS IN NIGERIA’ REMARK
Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has lambasted U.S. President Donald Trump over his recent comments about defending Christians in Nigeria, describing the statement as hypocritical and misleading.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday night, Shehu accused Trump of failing to protect Christians in his own country, where gun violence claims hundreds of lives weekly, yet claiming he wants to intervene in Nigeria.
“Trump is utterly incapable of saving 70 Christians killed daily right under his nose in the United States, yet claims he wants to defend Christians in Nigeria from persecution,” Shehu wrote.
Quoting the Bible, Shehu added, “Physician, heal thyself.”
He backed his argument with statistics, citing data from Everytown Research Journal, which shows that an average of 45,738 people are killed by gun violence annually in the U.S., most of whom are Christians killed by fellow citizens, not terrorists.
According to Shehu, approximately 125 people are killed daily through gun violence in the United States, with 327 shot daily, 117 dying, and 210 surviving with injuries.
He further alleged that Trump had been “misled into believing a one-sided narrative” about Nigeria’s security challenges and is using the issue as a political and economic pretext.
“Trump has been misled into a one-sided narrative and believes it to be the gospel truth. He wishes to spill the blood of both innocent and guilty Nigerians for the sake of accessing cheap and free mineral resources,” Shehu claimed.
Shehu’s comments come amid growing controversy surrounding Trump’s threat of military action against Nigeria if the government fails to stop alleged killings of Christians — a move many have condemned as reckless and dangerous.
