PHILIP SHAIBU REVEALS DOUBTS ABOUT OBASEKI’S LEADERSHIP BEFORE 2016
In a recent interview on Channels Television's Political Paradigm, Philip Shaibu, the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, opened up about his skepticism regarding ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki's leadership abilities even before they took office together on November 12, 2016.
Shaibu candidly stated, “I never believed in Obaseki’s capabilities as a leader. I was initially not in favor of him becoming governor.” He attributed his eventual support for Obaseki to the persuasion of Adams Oshiomhole, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). “Oshiomhole convinced us that Obaseki’s economic background was essential, especially as we were heading into a recession,” he recalled, noting that his trust was more in Oshiomhole than in Obaseki himself.
Reflecting on their time in office, Shaibu revealed that they dismantled their political structure to align with Obaseki's leadership, believing it was necessary for the state's progress. “We gave him everything to ensure a successful term,” he said.
However, he indicated that the political climate shifted dramatically during their second term. “The second term was characterized by a resurgence of godfatherism in Edo State,” he added, highlighting the complexities that arose as their partnership evolved. Shaibu's revelations shed light on the internal dynamics and challenges faced during their governance in Edo State.
