Peter Obi’s One-Term Pledge for 2027 Sparks Northern Debate

Peter Obi’s recent reaffirmation of a one-term presidency if elected in 2027 has ignited a fresh wave of political debate, especially among northern stakeholders.

Over the weekend, the former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate restated his commitment to serve only one term if elected. According to Obi, this promise is rooted in his belief that trust and integrity should guide leadership.

“I reiterate my vow: I will serve only one term of four years if elected President. That vow is sacrosanct,” Obi declared, emphasizing that his record proves his words can be trusted.

However, the statement has sparked mixed reactions, particularly from northern political figures who view the pledge with caution.

“Nigerians Must Hold Politicians Accountable” – Hakeem Baba-Ahmed

Former political adviser to President Bola Tinubu, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, responded by urging Nigerians to critically evaluate all presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 elections. While he acknowledged that “anything is possible” in Nigeria’s political space, he insisted that the electorate must demand specific plans from every candidate.

“We need good people, honest people… If you avoid the temptation to chase power for power’s sake, four years is enough,” Baba-Ahmed said, supporting the idea that one term could deliver real change if the right person is elected.

“We Can’t Trust Obi’s One-Term Promise” – Anthony Sani

Meanwhile, Anthony Sani, the former Secretary-General of the Arewa Consultative Forum, cast doubt on Obi’s sincerity. He argued that the pledge seems politically motivated by zoning arrangements rather than a commitment to good governance.

“Obi’s pledge isn’t based on performance but on expedience,” Sani said. He warned that northern leaders may not trust Obi to stick to one term, especially since the decision to recontest could involve pressure from his political allies.

Sani also noted that President Tinubu, if re-elected, would naturally have only one term left, making him a more predictable choice for northerners looking ahead to the 2031 rotation of power.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
