PETER OBI’S BIRTHDAY RALLY BANNED IN KADUNA DUE TO SECURITY ALERTS
The Kaduna State Police Command has prohibited a planned rally in celebration of the birthday of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate. The event, organized by his supporters, was scheduled to take place within the state.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the police warned that any individual or group found defying this order would face legal consequences.
According to the Command, credible intelligence indicates that criminal elements may attempt to infiltrate the rally, potentially using it as a means to incite violence and disrupt public peace.
The statement reiterated that all political rallies and related public gatherings remain suspended in Kaduna State until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially authorizes the commencement of political activities.
“The date chosen for the rally coincides with the political parties’ primaries scheduled by INEC,” the statement noted. “Holding the rally at the same time poses a high risk of disrupting these primaries, leading to possible tensions, clashes, and a breakdown of law and order.”
Organizers of the rally have been urged to call off any planned processions or gatherings to maintain public safety and avoid interference with other scheduled political events.
The Command emphasized its respect for citizens' right to association and political expression but maintained that such activities must align with existing legal and electoral guidelines.
“The Kaduna State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and will not hesitate to take lawful action against anyone who violates this directive,” the statement concluded.
