PETER OBI SLAMS WIKE–NAVAL OFFICER CLASH, CALLS IT A NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the recent confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a Nigerian Navy officer, describing it as a national embarrassment.
The clash reportedly occurred on Tuesday in Gaduwa, Abuja, after soldiers allegedly stopped Wike and his convoy from accessing a piece of land in the area.
Reacting via his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Obi expressed disappointment, saying the incident reflects the growing institutional disorder and lack of respect for due process in Nigeria.
He said what should have been a routine civil encounter had, once again, turned into a public spectacle, questioning the country’s leadership ethics and institutional boundaries.
“The recent needless altercation between the FCT Minister, HE Barr. Nyesom Wike, and a Naval officer is yet another unfortunate reflection of the growing institutional disorder in our country,” Obi wrote.
“What should ordinarily be a routine civic encounter has become a national embarrassment—a typical example coming out of a ‘disgraced country.’”
Obi went on to raise several questions about civil–military relations, leadership conduct, and the misuse of power, asking why the military continues to be drawn into purely civilian matters.
He stressed that public officials must act within the boundaries of their offices and respect established institutional norms to rebuild public trust and national dignity.
“It is time to rebuild a nation where institutions are stronger than individuals; where public office is exercised with humility and restraint; and where the dignity of our uniformed officers and rights of every citizen are upheld,” he added.
The former Anambra governor concluded by urging leaders to reflect on their behaviour and character in public office, insisting that the titles “His Excellency,” “Distinguished,” or “Honourable” should reflect integrity, discipline, and respect for the rule of law.
