PETER OBI OPPOSES DEREGISTRATION OF ADC, OTHER POLITICAL PARTIES

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has opposed calls for the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other political parties, arguing that such a move could weaken Nigeria’s democratic system.

Speaking on the ongoing debate surrounding political party regulation, Obi said democracy thrives when citizens have a wide range of political choices and platforms through which they can express their views and aspirations.

According to him, the existence of multiple political parties promotes healthy competition, strengthens representation, and encourages greater participation in the democratic process.

Obi cautioned against actions that could limit political diversity, stressing that efforts should instead focus on strengthening democratic institutions, improving electoral processes, and ensuring a level playing field for all parties.

He noted that political parties, regardless of their size, play important roles in shaping public discourse and providing alternatives for voters.

The former Anambra State governor also emphasized the need for adherence to constitutional provisions and democratic principles in matters relating to party registration and regulation.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions over the status of some political parties and the broader implications for Nigeria’s political landscape.
