PETER OBI MOURNS PETER RUFAI: “HE GAVE NIGERIANS UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS”
Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.
In a heartfelt message shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi described Rufai’s death as a huge loss, noting that the legendary shot-stopper gave his all for Nigeria and brought countless moments of joy to football-loving Nigerians.
“Rufai is unarguably one of Nigeria’s finest goalkeepers, who has now passed away at the age of 61,” Obi wrote. “As a passionate football fan, I can confidently say that Peter Rufai’s career was extremely legendary, so much that he earned the iconic nickname ‘Dodo Mayana’.”
Obi fondly recalled Rufai’s heroic performances, especially during Nigeria’s historic 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph and the country’s spirited run at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
“He stood tall for Nigeria. He gave us moments we will never forget and saves that lifted the whole nation,” Obi added.
The former Anambra governor prayed for the peaceful repose of Rufai’s soul and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in power, Peter Rufai, our Dodo Mayana,” he concluded.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Rufai died on Thursday in Lagos at the age of 61 following an illness. His death marks the end of an era for many Nigerian fans who still cherish his iconic saves and unwavering commitment to the green and white jersey.
