PETER OBI MAKES U-TURN, VOWS TO RESTORE FUEL SUBSIDY IF ELECTED IN 2027
Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate reverses previous stance, asserting that corruption rather than the subsidy itself is the primary challenge facing the petroleum sector
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has made a notable policy shift by vowing to reinstate the petroleum subsidy if elected to office in 2027.
Speaking during a media interview, the former Anambra State governor stated that his administration would reintroduce the pricing framework after systematically dismantling institutional corruption associated with it.
"Yes. But remember, I have qualified it, not with the corruption that's associated with it. I'll remove the corruption and retain the subsidy," Obi stated.
From day one, Obi maintained that the core issue plaguing the subsidy regime was systemic graft rather than the palliative mechanism itself, arguing that targeted state intervention remains necessary to cushion economic hardships for ordinary citizens.
The declaration marks a shift from his previous discussions surrounding energy pricing and structural economic reforms, drawing swift reactions from political analysts and opposing parties as 2027 electioneering gathers momentum.
During the same interaction, Obi also addressed broader national political dynamics, dismissing propositions regarding opposition coalition strategies and drawing distinctions between his governance approach and past administrations.
