PETER OBI HAILS SUSPENSION OF WASSCE, NECO FEE HIKE
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has welcomed the suspension of the proposed increase in fees for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.
Obi described the decision as a positive step towards easing the financial burden on Nigerian families, particularly at a time when many households are facing economic challenges.
He said access to quality education should remain a priority, stressing that examination fees should not become a barrier preventing students from pursuing their academic aspirations.
According to Obi, investing in education is critical to national development, urging policymakers to continue implementing measures that make learning more affordable and accessible for all Nigerians.
He also called for sustained efforts to improve the quality of education through better funding, improved infrastructure, teacher welfare, and enhanced learning resources.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the suspension of the proposed fee hike, noting that it offers relief to parents and guardians preparing candidates for the examinations.
Analysts observed that the decision could help reduce the financial pressure on families while encouraging greater participation in national and regional examinations.
Obi reiterated that education remains one of the strongest tools for tackling poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment, urging governments at all levels to prioritise the sector.
He expressed hope that future education policies would continue to focus on expanding opportunities for young Nigerians and improving learning outcomes across the country.
The former Anambra State governor concluded by encouraging continued dialogue among government agencies, education authorities, and stakeholders to ensure that examination costs remain affordable without compromising educational standards.
