PENSIONERS THREATEN NATIONWIDE NAKED PROTEST OVER UNPAID BENEFITS

The Coalition of Federal Pensioners of Nigeria has threatened to stage a nationwide naked protest on October 6 if the federal government fails to settle their outstanding benefits, increments, and palliatives.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, the coalition’s National Chairman, Mukaila Ogunbote, said pensioners have endured months of neglect despite several promises made by the government. He noted that the group had given authorities until the end of September to address their demands.

According to Ogunbote, the planned protest will not only demonstrate the desperation of pensioners but also serve as a symbolic exposure of the government’s failure to care for its senior citizens.

He recalled that in October 2023, President Bola Tinubu approved a N35,000 palliative for workers and N25,000 for pensioners. However, Ogunbote said their expected N32,000 pension increment was excluded from both the 2024 and 2025 budgets, describing the omission as “injustice.”

“If nothing is done, we will be left with no choice but to embark on a naked protest nationwide,” he declared.

The warning comes amid rising inflation and economic hardship, as many pensioners struggle to survive on meagre stipends while awaiting government action.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
