PDP CRISIS: WIKE’S GROUP CANNOT DICTATE TO PARTY – OKEREKE
Political commentator, Chibuzor Okereke, has weighed in on the ongoing crisis rocking the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), describing the conditions set by the G-5 group as unconstitutional.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Friday, Okereke argued that no individual or faction has the authority to impose conditions outside the party’s constitution for holding a national convention.
According to him, the current tussle is a reflection of deeper political maneuvering within the PDP.
“What we are seeing is simply a contest for power and influence. It’s unfortunate that the party has deteriorated to a point where certain individuals are dictating terms for the national convention,” Okereke said.
He explained that the G-5 group, loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is pushing for recognition of certain party officers and internal congresses to maintain its influence.
Okereke, however, noted that the National Executive Committee (NEC) is gradually reasserting its authority, despite having previously struggled to convene effectively.
Describing the situation as fragile, he stressed that the party must rely on its constitution to overcome internal divisions:
“It’s unconstitutional for one person or a small group to give conditions for a national convention. The party must stand on its laws, not on the influence of individuals.”
The PDP crisis, which has lingered since the 2023 elections, continues to expose deep cracks in the opposition party as factions battle for control ahead of future elections.
