PANIC IN LAGOS AS TRAIN COACH DETACHES MID-TRIP ON BUSY EXPRESSWAY
Commuters in Panic as Train Coach Detaches on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway
A routine Thursday morning turned chaotic after a train coach suddenly detached from the rest of its compartments along the Ladipo section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The incident happened around 8:00 a.m., causing confusion and a temporary halt in both train and road traffic.
The train, which was traveling from Ogba Ayo in Ogun State to Apapa in Lagos, experienced an unexpected mechanical fault that caused the rear coach to disconnect mid-trip. The detachment startled passengers and onlookers, especially as it occurred in the densely populated and traffic-prone Ladipo area.
Eyewitness Oloruntoba Omodele described the moment as terrifying but confirmed there were no injuries or casualties.
“Everyone was shocked by what happened, but thankfully, no lives were lost,” he said.
Emergency services responded swiftly, clearing the affected coach and helping to manage the traffic buildup that followed. Though the cause of the detachment is still under investigation, the incident has once again raised concerns about transport safety and maintenance standards—especially in a city like Lagos where both road and rail systems are heavily relied upon.
Transportation experts are calling on authorities to urgently investigate the root cause and take immediate steps to ensure better maintenance and safety checks on trains—particularly on busy urban routes.
While no lives were lost, many believe it’s a wake-up call that must not be ignored.
