OYO ISSUES HEATWAVE ALERT, URGES RESIDENTS TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS
The Oyo State Government has issued a heatwave alert, warning residents to take precautionary measures as temperatures soar across the state.
The advisory follows a severe heat stress warning from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, with temperatures reaching as high as 41°C in Oyo State.
Speaking in Ibadan, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, said the heatwave is part of a wider nationwide temperature surge.
He warned that the extreme heat poses serious health risks, including heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke, especially during peak hours.
Aderinto advised residents to limit outdoor activities between 12 pm and 4 pm, stay under shade when outside, and maintain proper hydration by drinking 2–3 litres of water daily.
He also encouraged the use of light, breathable clothing, as well as protective items like hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses, while ensuring good ventilation in homes and workplaces.
The commissioner cautioned against leaving children, elderly persons, or pets in parked vehicles, noting that temperatures inside cars can quickly rise to dangerous levels.
Residents were further urged to watch for symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and convulsions, and to check on vulnerable individuals within their communities.
He also highlighted the importance of preserving green spaces and participating in tree-planting initiatives to reduce the long-term impact of rising temperatures.
The government reassured residents of its commitment to public safety and promised to provide updates as the weather situation develops.
