The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has warned that the increasing adoption of digital technologies in the shipping industry could lead to new forms of disputes if proper regulations and safeguards are not put in place.

Oyetola said the shift towards digital shipping systems, including electronic documentation, automated processes, and technology-driven maritime operations, presents opportunities for efficiency but also creates emerging legal and operational challenges.

He stressed the need for stronger frameworks, industry cooperation, and updated regulations to address potential conflicts arising from digital transactions and ensure confidence in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

Maritime experts said digital transformation can improve transparency, reduce delays, and lower operational costs in shipping, but issues such as cybersecurity, data management, and liability must be carefully addressed.

They noted that as more businesses adopt digital platforms for cargo management, payments, and documentation, stakeholders must prepare mechanisms for resolving technology-related disputes.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s maritime industry while ensuring that digital innovation is supported by policies that protect businesses, investors, and other players in the shipping ecosystem.
