The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has inaugurated a committee for the Nigeria International Maritime and Blue Economy Exhibition (NIMBEX), as the Federal Government steps up efforts to attract investment into the country's maritime sector.

The initiative is expected to create opportunities for businesses, investors and other industry stakeholders to explore the potential of Nigeria's marine resources and strengthen the country's position in the global maritime industry.

Nigeria's maritime sector plays a significant role in international trade, with seaports serving as major gateways for the movement of imported and exported goods. Beyond port operations, the wider blue economy includes shipping, fisheries, aquaculture, marine tourism, shipbuilding and other activities linked to oceans and waterways.

Despite its potential, the sector still faces challenges involving infrastructure, operational efficiency, financing and the need for stronger investment. Addressing these issues could help unlock new business opportunities and support economic growth.

The establishment of the NIMBEX committee signals an effort to bring relevant stakeholders together and organise an exhibition that showcases investment opportunities within the sector. Such a platform could help connect Nigerian businesses with international investors, technology providers and potential business partners.

For Nigeria, attracting more maritime investment could support port development, improve logistics services and create employment across several industries. Increased investment could also encourage the adoption of modern technologies and improve the competitiveness of Nigerian maritime businesses.

The blue economy offers opportunities beyond traditional shipping and port activities. Fisheries, aquaculture and marine-related services, for example, can support livelihoods and contribute to food security, while marine tourism and other coastal activities may provide additional sources of revenue.

However, converting these opportunities into measurable economic benefits will require more than exhibitions and investment discussions. Investors will also look for clear regulations, reliable infrastructure, efficient port processes and policies that support long-term business operations.

The NIMBEX committee will therefore have an important role in ensuring that the initiative delivers meaningful engagement and creates pathways for potential investors to turn their interests into actual projects.

As the Federal Government continues to promote the marine and blue economy, the success of the initiative will ultimately depend on its ability to attract credible investors, encourage partnerships and support sustainable growth across Nigeria's maritime industry.
