Tension is rising in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, after a masquerade reportedly attacked an Islamic cleric during a public outing last Friday. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from religious leaders and rights groups, who are demanding immediate action from authorities.

According to reports, the masquerade, identified as Lobanika, used a cane to knock off the cap of a Muslim Imam walking peacefully. He also allegedly stormed Oṣaro market and attacked another Muslim man with a cutlass.

Reacting to the incident, the Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland, Dr. Teliat Yunus Ayilara, issued a strong warning, stating that continuous attacks on Muslims in the South West by masqueraders will no longer be tolerated.

“Enough is enough. We will not continue to accept this provocation. Do your festival peacefully and stop disturbing Muslims,” the Imam said.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has also condemned the assault, calling it "absurd and unacceptable."
In a statement by the Oyo State General Secretary, Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, MURIC called for the immediate arrest of the masquerade and urged the state government to step in to avoid future violence.

Agunbiade further expressed concerns over the upcoming Ololu Masquerade Festival scheduled to begin on Monday, July 28, in Ibadan, warning that tensions could escalate if no preventive steps are taken.

MURIC and other Muslim leaders are now urging the Oyo State Government and security agencies to ensure the safety and rights of all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs.

The incident has triggered a broader conversation about freedom of religion, public safety, and the need for mutual respect among different cultural and religious groups in the region.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
