OSUN, LAGOS, OGUN LEAD INEC’S FIRST CVR UPDATE AS SOUTH EAST RECORDS LOWEST TURNOUT
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the first statistical update on the ongoing online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the figures published on Monday, Osun, Lagos, and Ogun States recorded the highest number of new registrants within the first week of the exercise, while states in the South East posted the lowest numbers.
Osun State led with 393,269 registrants (28.51%), followed by Lagos with 222,205 (16.11%), Ogun with 132,823 (9.63%), and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 107,682 (7.81%).
In contrast, the South East recorded very low figures: Ebonyi (261), Imo (481), Enugu (484), and Abia (772). In total, the five South East states accounted for just 1,998 registrants.
A zonal breakdown shows the South West is leading overall with 848,359 registrants, followed by the North Central/FCT (250,218), North West (141,349), North East (77,653), and South South (59,676), with the South East trailing behind.
INEC also revealed that 27,089 persons living with disabilities have registered so far.
In a statement, Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, confirmed that a total of 1,379,342 Nigerians completed online pre-registration in the first week of the exercise, which began on Monday, August 18, 2025.
He added that women made up a slightly higher percentage of registrants, with 717,856 (52.04%), compared to 661,846 (47.96%) men. Young people between 18 and 34 years dominated the process, accounting for 860,286 (62.37%) of total registrants.
Students topped the occupational breakdown with 374,534 (27.15%) registrants.
Olumekun assured that full details of the registration have been published on INEC’s website and official platforms for public access.
