Flood Alert: Osun Government Urges Residents in High-Risk Areas to Take Precautions

The Osun State Government has raised an urgent alarm over potential flooding in parts of the state, specifically warning residents in Otan-Ayegbaju and Iragbiji communities to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flooding between July 31 and August 4, 2025.

The alert comes following a forecast from the Federal Ministry of Environment’s Department of Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management, which predicts intense rainfall that could lead to severe flooding.

Speaking during a press briefing, Emiola Fakeye, Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Emergency Management, stressed the importance of public safety and proactive measures.

“Governor Adeleke is deeply concerned about the safety of residents and has directed immediate action to reduce flood risks. We urge people in vulnerable areas to evacuate temporarily or take all necessary precautions,” she said.

In response, the government has begun clearing drains and desilting major waterways in the affected regions to improve water flow and reduce flood impact.

“These efforts are crucial, but community cooperation is equally important. Prevention is always better than cure,” Fakeye added.

Also speaking at the briefing, Abiola Oni, General Manager of the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA), cautioned residents against dumping waste into drainage systems, which often worsens flood conditions.

“Blocked drainages are a major cause of flooding. Everyone must play their part in keeping them clean,” Oni warned.

He added that emergency response teams are on standby to respond quickly if flooding occurs, and urged residents to report any signs of danger or emergencies immediately.

For more information or to seek assistance, residents can contact the Office of the General Manager, OSEMA, located on Elizabeth Road, Abere.

The state government continues to encourage all residents to stay informed, remain alert, and act responsibly to protect lives and property during this period of heavy rainfall.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
