OSIMHEN, NDIDI BATTLE TO A 1–1 DEADLOCK IN ISTANBUL SHOWDOWN
Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi faced off in the heated Istanbul derby on Saturday as Galatasaray and Besiktas battled to a 1-1 draw.
Both Super Eagles stars started the match and played for 86 minutes before being substituted — Ndidi made way for Kartal Yilmaz, while Osimhen was replaced by Mauro Icardi.
Besiktas took an early lead in the 12th minute through Tammy Abraham at Rams Park. However, the visitors’ momentum was disrupted when Davinson Sanchez received a red card in the 34th minute.
Galatasaray capitalised on their numerical advantage as Ilkay Gundogan netted the equaliser in the 55th minute, earning the hosts a point.
The result halted Galatasaray’s perfect start to the Turkish Super Lig campaign, after winning all seven of their previous matches.
Coming off a morale-boosting 1-0 win over English champions Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League—secured by Osimhen’s 16th-minute penalty—Okan Buruk’s men had been tipped to extend their winning run.
Despite playing with 10 men for more than an hour, Besiktas held firm to share the spoils.
Galatasaray remain at the top of the table with 22 points from eight matches, while Besiktas sit fifth with 13 points from seven games.
The draw also keeps Galatasaray’s strong offensive form intact, with 18 goals scored and just three conceded so far this season.
