ORTOM DISMISSES ADC COALITION, SAYS NO REGRET OPPOSING ATIKU IN 2023
Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has stated that the coalition movement under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) lacks staying power and will eventually fizzle out.
In a recent interview on Channels Television, Ortom made it clear that he has no intention of leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he says he leads in Benue State. He also reaffirmed his stance against Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential bid, saying he has no regrets about the role he played.
“I did not hide it. I have no regret,” Ortom said.
Ortom was part of the G5 group of PDP governors who openly opposed Atiku’s candidacy and supported Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 elections. He defended the decision as a matter of political principle, explaining that loyalty in politics is driven by aligned interests.
“If I have somebody working against my interest and the interest of my people, I have to fight back,” he said.
On the current political developments, Ortom criticized the viability of the ADC-led coalition, comparing it to the morning sun that quickly fades. He expressed doubt about its ability to endure, particularly given ongoing legal challenges.
“I’m not surprised by Atiku’s exit from the PDP. People are free to join any coalition they wish, but as for me and those I lead, we remain in the PDP,” he said.
Ortom added, “I am the leader of the PDP in Benue State and a member of the Board of Trustees. I am not joining any coalition. We have no business with that.”
He concluded by stating, “I don’t see it surviving. Even if they make it through the legal battles, they will be decisively defeated.”
