OPPOSITION LAWMAKERS JOINING APC FOR NATIONAL INTEREST – AKPABIO
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has attributed the recent wave of defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to what he described as an act of patriotism and confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
Akpabio made this known on Wednesday night after leading Senator Agom Jarigbe of Cross River North and Senator Kaila Samaila of Bauchi North to a meeting with President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
The two lawmakers recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the APC.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Akpabio said the lawmakers’ decision to align with the ruling party was influenced by the president’s economic reforms and dedication to national development.
“They (Jarigbe and Samaila) are Mr President’s children and supporters. The president is the father of the nation and of all political parties,” Akpabio stated.
He explained that although the senators were elected under different political platforms, the president’s transformative policies inspired them to join the APC and contribute to nation-building.
“But interestingly, they joined the Senate on different platforms. However, due to Mr President’s policies that have significantly improved the economy, particularly in revenue generation, they found it necessary to join efforts in building Nigeria.
“Theirs is an act of patriotism. They are not focused on which party holds power but on who can lead Nigeria effectively, improve the country, and ensure food security for citizens,” he added.
In his remarks, Senator Jarigbe said his defection was based on his conviction that President Tinubu is performing well.
He noted that joining the APC reflects his commitment to supporting the president’s vision and policies aimed at repositioning the nation.
“I joined the APC because the president is doing well, and I want to support him in delivering the dividends of democracy to our people,” Jarigbe stated.
