The new Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force, Northwest Operation Fansan Yamma (OPFY), Maj.-Gen. Bello Idris, has pledged to completely eliminate banditry in Zamfara State, affirming that the military will adopt a decisive and proactive approach against criminal groups.

Idris, who assumed command of OPFY in November after his redeployment from the Defence Headquarters’ Department of Transformation and Innovation, made the statement on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to Governor Dauda Lawal in Gusau.

He emphasized that tackling banditry in Zamfara is vital for restoring security nationwide, noting that the military would intensify operations and dismantle the networks supporting criminal activities in the state.

The commander revealed that new operational strategies focusing on efficiency, deeper community engagement, and enhanced coordination would be implemented in the coming weeks. He expressed concern that many bandits either live within local communities or benefit from strong support systems among residents, and pledged to confront these alliances through improved intelligence gathering and security presence.

Idris also disclosed plans to deploy additional manpower, logistics, and equipment to support the intensified offensive, promising a mobile and aggressive approach to flush out criminals. He commended Governor Lawal for improved road infrastructure and ongoing support for security agencies operating in the state.

In response, Governor Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s backing for the military operation, noting that the state had procured 30 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to bolster the fight against banditry. Describing Idris as a “son of the soil,” the governor said the commander’s familiarity with the terrain would aid the success of the renewed offensive and reiterated that his administration would not negotiate with bandits under any circumstances.

Maj.-Gen. Idris currently oversees joint operations across the North West and parts of the North Central regions, including Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Sokoto, and Zamfara states.
