Fintech company OPay has begun legal action against individuals and groups accused of creating and circulating false claims that the company planned to shut down its operations in Nigeria.

OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, disclosed this during a press conference in Lagos, saying the company had involved the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force in efforts to identify those behind the claims.

According to Rokosu, one related case is already before the court, while investigations are ongoing to establish the source and spread of the information. He said the company would pursue the matter through the legal system.

The controversy followed a viral message claiming that OPay would suspend its Nigerian operations from September 1, 2026, and advising customers to withdraw or move their funds.

OPay has dismissed the claim as false and assured customers that its services remain operational.

The company’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Dotun Adekunle, said there was no decision to shut down the business and urged customers to disregard the circulating message.

OPay also called on members of the public to verify information through its official communication channels before sharing or acting on claims about its services.

The company said the legal action was aimed at protecting customers and its reputation while ensuring that those responsible for deliberately spreading false information are held accountable.
