OPay has dismissed a viral message claiming that the fintech company would suspend its operations and embark on an indefinite break from September 1, 2026.

The company described the circulating publication as false and urged its customers to disregard the message, stressing that its services remain fully operational.

In a statement shared through its verified social media platforms, OPay said it had no plans to shut down or suspend its services.

The fintech company specifically warned customers against believing the message, which reportedly encouraged users to withdraw or transfer their funds ahead of the alleged shutdown.

OPay said the publication contained several red flags and advised users to carefully verify information before sharing or acting on it.

The company also urged customers to rely exclusively on its verified communication channels for authentic information concerning its services and operations.

OPay's Vice-President, Public and Government Affairs, Dr Maxwell Loko, described the viral publication as “false, malicious and misleading.”

Loko cautioned customers against making financial decisions based on the fabricated information, particularly withdrawing or transferring their money because of the shutdown claim.

He further advised members of the public to disregard the message and obtain information about OPay directly from the company's verified platforms.

The executive warned that deliberate attempts to circulate false information capable of causing panic or undermining confidence in a financial institution could have legal consequences.

The development has raised concerns about the growing spread of fabricated messages targeting financial institutions and other businesses through social media platforms.

Such messages can create unnecessary panic among customers, particularly when they involve claims about the safety of people's money or the continued operation of financial services.

OPay therefore encouraged its customers to exercise caution when receiving messages about its operations and to verify such claims before taking any financial action.

The company reaffirmed that it remains operational and that there is no planned shutdown beginning September 1, 2026.

The clarification is expected to calm concerns among customers who may have encountered the viral message and feared that the fintech platform was preparing to suspend its services.

OPay's warning also highlights the importance of checking financial information through official sources rather than relying on unverified social media publications.
