Digital financial services company OPay has marked eight years of operations in Nigeria, highlighting its growth and continued focus on using technology to make financial services more accessible to individuals and businesses. Since beginning operations in the country in 2018, the company has expanded beyond basic digital payments to provide services that allow customers to transfer money, pay bills, purchase airtime and data and carry out other everyday financial transactions through digital platforms.

Over the years, OPay has positioned itself around financial inclusion, with its services becoming part of the daily activities of different groups of Nigerians. Students use the platform for data purchases, households for bill payments, traders and business owners for receiving payments, while other customers rely on its digital channels for routine money transfers. The company said its continued investment in technology, customer support and security has been aimed at responding to changing customer needs as digital finance becomes increasingly important.

OPay has also highlighted its social investment programmes as part of its activities in Nigeria. Among these is a ₦1.2bn scholarship commitment spread over 10 years to support young Nigerians pursuing education. The company has also undertaken initiatives focused on youth development, women’s empowerment, skills development and community support, presenting these programmes as part of its wider contribution beyond financial transactions.

The anniversary comes as OPay continues to operate in a Nigerian digital-finance market that has grown rapidly alongside increasing demand for electronic payments. The company has said its journey has involved adapting to changing technology, customer expectations and regulatory requirements while maintaining its focus on serving individuals and businesses. In September, OPay also dismissed a false online notice claiming that it planned to suspend operations, assuring customers that its services remained available and that the alleged shutdown notice was fabricated.

Eight years after entering the Nigerian market, OPay says its focus remains on expanding access to digital financial services and supporting the everyday transactions of Nigerians. The company’s anniversary message reflects its description of the journey as one of continued investment, innovation and service, while emphasising its stated commitment to remaining active in the Nigerian market and developing solutions around the financial needs of its customers.
