Opay has refuted a viral message circulating on social media that claims the fintech company is distributing cash gifts to users in celebration of the festive season.

The misleading post, which gained traction on X on Thursday, stated: “Opay just sent every user ₦5,000 for Christmas celebration. Did you receive yours?”

Reacting to the claim in a statement issued on Friday, Opay described the message as false and deceptive, warning the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to fraudsters.

The company clarified that it is not running any cash giveaway or money distribution programme during the festive period.

Opay further cautioned users against transferring money to unknown individuals and advised them never to disclose sensitive personal details, including their Bank Verification Number (BVN).

The statement read: “Opay is not giving money to anyone during this festive season. Beware of scammers. Do not transfer money to strangers and never share your BVN with anyone.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
