A Professor of Communications at Baze University, Abiodun Adeniyi, has explained why elections in Nigeria are frequently disputed.

During an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday, Adeniyi said the root cause of contested elections is a lack of transparency. He stressed that the biggest challenge to Nigeria’s democracy is the electoral process itself, and that ensuring credible elections requires collective effort.

“While we often celebrate the longevity of our democracy, now 26 years, the reality is that elections remain its greatest challenge. They are constantly contested and disputed because transparency is lacking. Free, fair, and credible elections are still difficult to conduct,” Adeniyi said.

He added that strengthening Nigeria’s democracy requires making the electoral process more open, transparent, and credible, suggesting that technology could play a key role in this improvement.

“Whenever citizens notice deviations from transparency, it raises concern. This is why communications from the Senate can be disturbing if they are unclear or poorly conveyed, leading to confusion and misinterpretation,” he noted.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
