ONE YEAR INTO OPAY’S ₦1.2 BILLION SCHOLARSHIP INITIATIVE: WHAT COMES NEXT?

OPay says it is reviewing the first year of its ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship programme aimed at supporting students across Nigeria, as attention shifts to the next phase of the initiative.

The programme, which was launched to expand access to education for young Nigerians, provides financial support to students in selected institutions to help cover tuition and related academic costs.

After one year of implementation, the company says it is assessing progress, including the number of beneficiaries reached, the impact on student retention, and how the scheme can be expanded or improved going forward.

The initiative is part of a long-term commitment to education support, with funding spread over a decade to ensure continuity and sustained impact rather than short-term intervention.

Stakeholders involved in the programme say the first phase focused on identifying eligible students and building partnerships with educational institutions to ensure proper disbursement and monitoring of funds.

As the programme enters its second phase, discussions are expected to focus on scaling reach, improving transparency, and possibly expanding to more schools or academic categories.

Education remains a major concern in Nigeria, with many students facing financial challenges that affect access to higher learning. Corporate scholarship schemes like this are increasingly seen as a way to complement government efforts in the sector.

OPay has not yet released full details of new expansions, but says future updates will outline how the initiative evolves over its planned 10-year period.
