A violent communal clash between Fulani and Gwari residents in Gurfata village, located in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has left one person dead and many villagers without homes.

The conflict, which broke out on Tuesday, reportedly started as a minor disagreement over access to a farmland path but quickly escalated into deadly violence. At least 31 houses were set ablaze, and several people were injured in the chaos.

According to security analyst Makama, the clash began when Shaibu Adamu, a Fulani herder, attempted to pass through a farmland belonging to Sa’adu, a Gwari farmer. Sa’adu refused him access, suggesting another route. This disagreement led to a physical fight.

The situation worsened when Shaibu’s elder brother, Adamu Ibrahim, allegedly attacked a Gwari resident, Dahiru Yakubu, with a machete. Yakubu was rushed to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital but later died from his injuries.

News of Yakubu’s death sparked a violent reprisal by enraged Gwari youths, who attacked the Fulani settlement, burning down dozens of homes and injuring at least three people.

Military personnel and security forces were later deployed to restore order and prevent further escalation.

Authorities have yet to confirm the number of displaced persons, but local sources say many families have fled the area out of fear.

Community leaders and officials are calling for calm and urging both groups to embrace peaceful dialogue to resolve long-standing tensions.

The tragic incident highlights the urgent need for conflict resolution strategies and stronger community relations in rural areas of the FCT.
