ONE DEAD AS FIGHT BREAKS OUT OVER NEW MOTOR PARK IN LAGOS
Tragedy struck in the Alaba Rago area of Iba, Lagos State, on Sunday after violence erupted between road transport workers (agberos) and supporters of a local monarch over the launch of a new motor park.
The confrontation led to the death of a passerby, who was hit and killed by a speeding vehicle while trying to cross the road during the chaos.
The conflict reportedly began shortly after the unveiling of the new motor park, which was allegedly set up by the traditional ruler to serve vehicles heading to northern and eastern Nigeria. However, existing transport workers in the area saw the park as a threat to their operations and revenue, sparking tension.
Eyewitnesses said the clash started early Sunday morning and quickly intensified. During the confusion, a pedestrian was tragically caught in the middle and struck by a fast-moving car. The victim died on the spot.
Shocking videos from the scene showed residents surrounding the body, with bystanders using a wrapper to cover the remains.
In response to the violence, the Lagos State Police Command stepped in to restore peace. Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that the State Commissioner of Police visited the area for an assessment and has since held meetings with both parties involved at the command headquarters in Ikeja.
The police say peace talks are ongoing to prevent further clashes and restore calm to the area.
