One person has died and another sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle accident near the old Sagamu toll gate along the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogun State.

The crash occurred at about 4:50 a.m. on Wednesday and involved three trucks and a Toyota Sienna bus. The vehicles included a white Sino truck without a registration number, a DAF truck with registration number TRE, and a green Mack truck, also without a registration number.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to journalists in Abeokuta.

According to Akinbiyi, six people, all male, were involved in the accident. One person died, while another sustained injuries. Officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reportedly evacuated the deceased and injured victim before TRACE officials arrived at the scene.

Akinbiyi explained that the accident occurred when the driver of the Sienna bus allegedly drove against traffic and attempted to flag down an approaching truck. The bus subsequently lost control and crashed into vehicles parked at a station.

Following the collision, traffic officials diverted vehicles to facilitate the removal of the wreckage and prevent further disruption along the busy expressway.

The damaged vehicles were later towed to the Motor Traffic Division of the police in Sagamu for further investigation.

TRACE said the road had been cleared and was open to motorists following the recovery operation.

The incident has renewed concerns about reckless driving and dangerous manoeuvres on major highways. Motorists have been urged to obey traffic regulations, avoid driving against traffic and exercise caution, particularly around heavy-duty vehicles.

Authorities continue to emphasise that compliance with road safety rules is essential to reducing preventable deaths and injuries on Nigeria’s highways.
