The death toll linked to the consumption of a suspected poisonous herbal drink in Ondo State has risen to 49, with about 170 people affected by the health crisis. The incident, which was initially recorded in Araromi-Obu and Odigbo communities in Odigbo Local Government Area, has now extended to Irele Local Government Area, where eight additional deaths have been reported.

The Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, confirmed the latest figures, saying about 170 people had either been admitted for treatment or died following the consumption of the substance. He said Irele had become the latest area of serious concern, with health officials already deployed to respond to the situation and prevent further spread.

The crisis has developed rapidly since the first deaths were recorded earlier in September. Initial reports put the number of deaths at 24 before the figure increased to 27 and later 29. Health authorities have linked the illness to the consumption of a toxic alcoholic substance, although investigations and laboratory examinations are still being conducted to establish the exact chemical responsible.

The police have also commenced an investigation into the incident and arrested Oloruntoba Babatunde, popularly known as Meko, who is suspected of producing the herbal liquid linked to the deaths. Fourteen other people were also arrested for allegedly selling or consuming herbal products in violation of restrictions imposed by the local authorities. Substances suspected to contain methanol have been recovered and submitted for further examination.

The state government has intensified medical, security and investigative efforts in the affected communities, while health officials have warned residents against consuming unlicensed or unverified alcoholic and herbal products. Authorities have also urged anyone experiencing symptoms such as blurred vision, difficulty breathing, severe weakness or confusion after consuming alcohol to seek medical attention immediately as investigations continue into the deaths.
