Tragedy struck in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, after a young boy was allegedly beaten to death for plucking cocoa pods.

The incident occurred at Alumni Quarters, Akungba, where the suspect reportedly assaulted the victim for allegedly harvesting his cocoa unlawfully.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim was brought to the police station in an unconscious state around 2:30 p.m., before being rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Despite medical efforts, he was confirmed dead a few hours later.

Confirming the development, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ayanlade Olayinka, said the suspect had been arrested.

Olayinka explained that the body of the deceased has been deposited in the hospital mortuary for autopsy.

He further disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Akure, for thorough investigation.

While condemning the act, the police spokesperson warned residents against jungle justice and self-help, stressing that such actions undermine peace and the rule of law.

“No individual has the right to take laws into their own hands. Anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” Olayinka said.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
