3 Amotekun Officers Injured in Gun Battle With Suspected Kidnappers in Ondo
Three officers of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, were injured during a fierce gunfight with suspected kidnappers in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred while Amotekun operatives were pursuing the kidnappers believed to have abducted seven farmers in Itaogbolu on Saturday. The farmers were reportedly taken while harvesting palm fruits on their farms.
According to reports, the abductors contacted the victims’ families the following day, demanding a ransom of ₦100 million for their release.
Speaking on the incident, Adetunji Adeleye, the Commander of Amotekun in Ondo State, confirmed that the officers came under heavy gunfire when they closed in on the criminals on Tuesday.
“We caught up to them yesterday, but they opened fire on us, leaving three of my men severely injured. They were almost killed,” Adeleye stated.
He emphasized that although no lives were lost, the injured officers have been hospitalized and are receiving medical care. He also revealed that the corps has remained in the bush, tracking the kidnappers' movements and working tirelessly to rescue the victims.
“We are camped in the forest, and we will not leave until those kidnapped farmers are found. By God’s grace, we’ll secure their release,” he added.
This latest incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in parts of Ondo State, particularly with rising concerns about farm-related abductions. It also sheds light on the bravery of local security operatives who continue to risk their lives to protect rural communities.
The Amotekun Corps has assured residents that they are doing everything possible to ensure the safe return of the abducted farmers and bring the perpetrators to justice.
