ONAZI BLASTS MAN UNITED FOR SNUBBING OSIMHEN OVER AFCON
Former Ogenyi Onazi has criticised Manchester United for reportedly overlooking Victor Osimhen because of his potential participation in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Onazi’s remarks followed comments by ex-United first-team coach Benni McCarthy, who revealed that the striker—currently with Galatasaray—was omitted from the club’s shortlist due to concerns about his availability for Nigeria during AFCON.
However, Onazi dismissed the explanation as unconvincing, arguing that the club should have prioritised Osimhen’s quality and potential impact.
“I don’t see that as a valid reason for not signing Victor,” Onazi said. “If they truly understand what he can bring to the team, AFCON shouldn’t be an excuse. Many key players at top clubs also represent their countries in the tournament.”
He pointed to the example of Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, noting that clubs regularly manage similar situations with African stars.
“I think it’s simply a flimsy excuse,” he added.
