Nigerian para powerlifter Folashade Oluwafemiayo has set her sights on claiming the 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championship title in Cairo, Egypt, with Team Nigeria, after shattering her own world record at the ongoing competition.

The four-time world champion lifted 168kg in the women’s over 86kg category, surpassing her previous world record of 167kg set at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Her performance earned her two gold medals — in the total lift and best lift events.

China’s Wenjun took silver with a 157kg lift, while Iran’s Nikoo Rozbahani secured bronze with 152kg.

In an interview shared by the National Sports Commission, the 40-year-old athlete expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received.

“I broke the world record and made Nigeria proud. I thank the sports commission for their support, and I also appreciate Mr. President, His Excellency. God will continue to bless you,” she said.

“We promise to bring the championship trophy back to Aso Rock, and I believe, as a father, you will receive and celebrate us.”

Oluwafemiayo’s triumph marks her fourth world title, adding to her previous victories in Mexico City (2017), Nur-Sultan (2019), and Tbilisi (2021). She is also a two-time Paralympic gold medalist, with her most recent win coming at the Paris 2024 Games.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
