OLA OF LAGOS EXPLAINS WHY HE STILL RENTS DESPITE OWNING HOUSES
Nigerian social media personality Waris Olayinka Akinwande, popularly known as Ola of Lagos, has explained why he continues to live in rented apartments despite owning houses. The influencer said his decision is deliberate and is based on his desire to remain financially driven rather than become too comfortable. He made the remarks while speaking during an interview on the KK Show, where he discussed his approach to managing his earnings and investments.
Ola of Lagos said he has never lived in any of the houses he purchased with his own money because he believes having a personal residence could make him less motivated to work. According to him, paying rent creates a financial responsibility that pushes him to keep earning. He explained that knowing he has to raise a substantial amount to cover his annual rent makes him maintain a stronger work ethic instead of becoming complacent.
The influencer stressed that his approach is based on his personal circumstances and should not be treated as a general rule for everyone. He advised people who own houses to feel free to live in their properties if that works better for them, noting that individuals should make financial decisions according to their own situations rather than allowing his choices to determine how they manage their lives.
Ola of Lagos also spoke about how people should approach major purchases after earning their first significant income. He cautioned against blindly following general financial advice, particularly suggestions about whether someone should buy a house or a car first. He noted that the right decision can differ from one person to another, depending on their circumstances, financial goals and ability to turn their assets into further opportunities.
He cited the experience of one of his online mentors, who had advised that buying his first car eventually helped him acquire his houses. Ola of Lagos said the example reinforced his belief that financial decisions should be tailored to an individual’s current situation. His comments have since generated reactions online, with social media users discussing his unusual choice to continue paying rent even though he owns properties.
