Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has celebrated Dr Ekiomado Eki-Udoko following her emergence as the first female neurosurgeon from Edo and Delta states and the wider old Midwest Region.

The governor hosted the medical specialist in recognition of what he described as a remarkable achievement for the state and Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Dr Eki-Udoko recently completed the requirements to become a certified neurosurgeon after years of specialist training.

Her achievement also marks a major milestone for women pursuing careers in highly specialised areas of medicine, where female representation remains limited.

The management of the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Benin also praised the doctor, describing her success as a significant moment for the institution and the region’s healthcare system.

Governor Okpebholo said Dr Eki-Udoko’s accomplishment reflects dedication, resilience and academic excellence, adding that her journey could inspire more young people, particularly women, to pursue careers in medicine and other specialised fields.

Dr Eki-Udoko’s qualification is expected to strengthen access to specialised neurosurgical care in Edo and neighbouring states, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances in search of expert medical services.
