Nigeria’s foremost Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has confirmed that discreet but serious discussions are underway between President Bola Tinubu, Minister of Works David Umahi, and select Igbo elders aimed at securing the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement on Wednesday, the organization revealed that these diplomatic efforts are not only backed by the blessings of Igbo leadership but also seen as a crucial step toward national reconciliation. The group stressed that this is more than a personal promise—it’s a matter of national urgency that could help heal long-standing divisions.

The confirmation comes amid tensions sparked by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, who dismissed earlier reports of negotiations as “reckless propaganda” intended to mislead the public. IPOB also criticized Umahi, questioning his motives and describing the alleged talks as deceitful.

But Ohanaeze, in its response through Deputy President-General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and spokesperson Thompson Ohia, set the record straight. They disclosed that while not all of Kanu’s close associates are currently part of the discussions, plans are in place to involve them later to ensure transparency and build trust.

The group also urged pro-Biafra supporters to remain calm and give room for this sensitive process to play out, emphasizing that no political strings will be attached to Kanu’s release.

“Ohanaeze rejects any suggestion that Kanu’s freedom will be traded for political support from the Southeast. That’s simply not true,” the statement said, adding that anyone spreading such rumors is misguided.

Ohanaeze further cautioned against attacks on Senator Umahi and federal authorities, noting that such actions only undermine the collective goal of freeing Nnamdi Kanu. The group instead appealed to all agitators to focus on the bigger picture—restoring peace and justice.

In a passionate appeal to President Tinubu, Ohanaeze urged him to seize this opportunity to build a lasting legacy by doing what is “just and right.”

“This decision could echo across the nation, fostering unity and showing that we can come together for peace. Let history remember you for making the bold move that united Nigeria,” the statement concluded.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
