No Suspension of Osun Speaker – Conference Chairman Debunks Online Rumours

The Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin, has firmly denied reports claiming that the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Adewale Egbedun, has been suspended.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Ibadan, Ogundoyin described the report as false, malicious, and an intentional attempt to mislead the public. He clarified that no such suspension was ever discussed or announced by the Conference.

“There was no such suspension. No press conference was held in Ibadan or anywhere else, and no such pronouncement was made by me or any authorized representative of the Conference,” Ogundoyin stated.

He emphasized that the Conference of Speakers is a well-structured and transparent body that strictly follows due process in all matters, including disciplinary actions. He further affirmed that Speaker Egbedun remains a respected and active member of the Conference and has not been found guilty of any wrongdoing.

The online blog in question had falsely alleged that Egbedun was suspended over accusations of insubordination and abuse of office. Ogundoyin, however, dismissed the story as a “baseless fabrication lacking any journalistic credibility.”

He also expressed disappointment in the blog’s conduct and called on media outlets to verify information before publishing, especially when reputations are at stake.

“Freedom of the press comes with responsibility. Fake news must be tackled with urgency,” he said, adding that the Conference may consider legal action if a retraction and public apology are not issued by the blog.

This incident serves as a reminder of the growing concern over misinformation and the importance of responsible journalism in shaping public opinion and preserving institutional integrity.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
