The Ogun State Government has released an assessment report on lead exposure in Ogijo and surrounding communities, warning that industrial facilities found to pose pollution risks could face closure.

Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, announced the report on Tuesday in Abeokuta during activities marking the 2026 International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.

She said the assessment would guide measures to prevent further exposure, strengthen environmental health monitoring and protect residents, particularly children, pregnant women and industrial workers.

The report was developed by the state Ministry of Health in collaboration with other government agencies and implementing partners.

Coker said concerns about suspected lead pollution in Ogijo required a coordinated response involving health officials, environmental authorities, waste management agencies, industries and community leaders.

She stressed that the government’s work must go beyond identifying cases to investigating possible sources of contamination and preventing further exposure.

The commissioner also highlighted the need to communicate risks clearly and help residents seek appropriate healthcare.

According to her, releasing the report is only one stage of the intervention. Its findings and recommendations must lead to practical decisions and stronger safeguards for affected communities.

Coker reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustained monitoring, community engagement and action to protect public health.
