OGUN STATE SPECIAL MARSHALS URGE COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY TO MITIGATE ROAD TRAFFIC CRASHES ACROSS NIGERIA
Federal Road Safety Corps voluntary arm calls for heightened driver discipline, community participation, and strict adherence to traffic regulations to improve highway safety nationwide
The Special Marshals, a voluntary arm of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), have declared that achieving long-term safety on Nigerian roads requires a collective responsibility involving motorists, pedestrians, corporate bodies, and enforcement agencies.
Speaking during an advocacy campaign and stakeholder engagement exercise organized by the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC in Abeokuta, the State Coordinator of the Special Marshals emphasized that road safety cannot be left solely to government law enforcement personnel.
The coordinator pointed out that human factors, such as overspeeding, dangerous overtaking, route violation, distracted driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, continue to account for the vast majority of fatal road traffic crashes recorded across the country.
Highlighting the vital role of civic compliance, the Special Marshals called on transport unions, fleet operators, and private vehicle owners to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance, driver education, and strict adherence to speed limits, especially along high-density interstate corridors.
The voluntary organization reaffirmed its commitment to complementing the operational efforts of regular FRSC officers through intensified public enlightenment, school safety clubs, traffic management support during peak travel seasons, and community-level safety advocacy.
Representatives of commercial transport associations and civil society groups present at the event pledged enhanced cooperation with road safety authorities, acknowledging that proactive public participation remains essential to reducing preventable fatalities and injuries on Nigerian highways.
