The Ogun State Police Command has debunked a viral video circulating on social media, which claimed that kidnappers recently attacked passengers along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, clarified on Monday that the incident did not occur in Ogun State and was not recent as portrayed online. According to her, investigations revealed the video was from 2022 and actually happened along the Ogun–Oyo boundary axis of the expressway.

The video, which resurfaced over the weekend, showed a Toyota Sienna vehicle with a man in blue traditional attire allegedly shot in the head, while a background voice claimed Fulani herdsmen had opened fire on the car and kidnapped the passengers.

Odutola described the circulation of the video as misleading, warning that spreading outdated clips could fuel unnecessary panic and even incite ethnic tension.

“It is important to clarify that the incident is not recent and did not occur in Ogun State. This has been further confirmed by the Oyo State Police Command,” she said.

She stressed that the Ogun State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has significantly weakened the operations of kidnappers in the area, with many offenders arrested, prosecuted, and convicted.

Odutola further cautioned that those deliberately spreading false or outdated information risk facing the full wrath of the law. She urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
