The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 22-year-old man identified as Daniel in Ogun State over allegations that he drugged and sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the suspect allegedly gave the teenager a malt drink that caused her to lose consciousness before allegedly having unlawful sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

According to the police, the incident was reported to the authorities, leading to the arrest of the suspect. Daniel is currently being held in police custody as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.

The victim was subsequently taken to the Olukoye Ransome-Kuti Memorial Hospital in Asero for medical examination and necessary care.

The police said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, where further investigation is being conducted.

Authorities are expected to interview the suspect and other relevant persons as part of efforts to establish what happened and gather evidence that could support the case.

The police did not disclose the exact location where the alleged incident occurred or the relationship between the suspect and the teenager.

The latest case comes about a month after the Ogun State Police Command arrested a 50-year-old man, Saliu Akinwande, over the alleged defilement of an 11-year-old girl in the Agbado area of the state.

In that earlier case, the victim was also taken for medical examination while the suspect was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.

The police have continued to urge members of the public, particularly parents and guardians, to promptly report suspected cases of sexual abuse involving minors to law enforcement authorities.

The latest arrest underscores continued concerns over the safety of children and teenagers and the need for families, communities and security agencies to work together to prevent sexual abuse and ensure that alleged offenders are brought before the appropriate authorities.
