OGUN OFFICIALS ARREST WOMAN CAUGHT DUMPING REFUSE INTO DRAINAGE

Environmental authorities in Ogun State have arrested a woman who was captured on video dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Sagamu during rainfall. The arrest was carried out by the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, in collaboration with Environmental Health Officers of Sagamu Local Government, following the circulation of the video on social media.

In the viral footage, the woman was seen carrying a yellow sack filled with waste before emptying its contents directly into the drainage. Despite being filmed and confronted over the act, she appeared unfazed and continued with the disposal. The video subsequently attracted attention online, prompting environmental authorities to identify and apprehend her.

OGWAMA confirmed the arrest in a statement posted on Tuesday, saying the woman was apprehended after officials became aware of the video showing the alleged environmental violation. The agency did not immediately disclose further details about her identity or whether she would face prosecution for the offence.

The incident has renewed concerns over indiscriminate waste disposal in Ogun communities, particularly the practice of dumping refuse into drainage channels. Such actions can obstruct the free flow of water and increase the risk of flooding, especially during periods of heavy rainfall, while also creating unsanitary conditions in surrounding communities.

OGWAMA urged residents to desist from indiscriminate disposal of waste and instead patronise waste collection operators accredited by the state authority. The agency stressed that maintaining a clean environment requires the cooperation of residents, businesses and government agencies, describing a cleaner Ogun State as a shared responsibility.
