OGUN GOVT TO DISMANTLE ILLEGAL PARKS, END STREET TRADING AT SANGO TOLLGATE
The Ogun State Government has announced plans to relocate illegal motor parks and stop street trading at the Sango Tollgate area in a bid to curb the frequent road accidents recorded at the Ogun–Lagos border.
The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, disclosed this on Friday during an inspection visit to the Sango Tollgate area. He was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Environment, the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), and the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government as part of efforts to find a lasting solution to the persistent accidents occurring at the border point.
Oresanya explained that barricades would be constructed on both sides of the tollgate to prevent interstate buses and street traders from returning to the location once they are relocated.
He also announced that a comprehensive environmental clean-up would commence in the area, while environmental marshals would be deployed to ensure strict compliance with the new directives.
According to the commissioner, the action follows a directive from the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, who expressed concern over the repeated loss of lives caused by accidents in the area.
“After carefully reviewing the situation on the ground with relevant government officials and stakeholders, the state government has decided to relocate the illegal motor park and eliminate the street trading that has existed at the tollgate for about 25 years. The activities will be moved to more recognised and properly organised locations away from the area,” Oresanya said.
He added that the barricades would be constructed in collaboration with the local government to ensure traders and transport operators do not return to the site.
In addition, officials from the Ogun State Waste Management Authority will carry out a complete clean-up of the area, while officials from Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, working alongside environmental marshals from the Ministry of Environment, will enforce compliance with the new order.
Oresanya noted that the relocation and enforcement exercise will commence within the next few days.
The decision follows a series of fatal accidents in the area. Last Friday, at least three people lost their lives while six others sustained injuries in a road accident at the Sango-Ota tollgate section of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.
The incident came just weeks after another tragic crash at the same location, where a trailer tanker reportedly suffered brake failure, leading to the deaths of six men and one woman.
