OGUN ASSEMBLY SUMMONS COMMISSIONER OVER REPEATED GAS LEAK
The Ogun State House of Assembly has summoned a commissioner over repeated gas leaks, bringing renewed attention to environmental safety concerns in the state.
The development comes amid reports of recurring suspected gas emissions affecting schools in Ijebu-Ode and surrounding areas.
In earlier incidents, students required medical attention after experiencing breathing difficulties. The state government also temporarily relocated students of Our Lady of Apostles Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode while investigations continued.
Ogun’s Ministry of Environment previously said monitoring had detected methane in affected areas. Officials suggested that underground geological activity could be involved, although a complete explanation of the recurring incidents remained under investigation.
Reports of another suspected emission on Wednesday, October 21, have added urgency to questions about the source and the measures needed to protect school communities.
The assembly’s summons puts the focus on accountability and the need for clear information about the government’s response. However, the hearing date and the commissioner’s formal response were not independently confirmed.
For parents, students and teachers, the immediate concern is a safe learning environment. Establishing the source of the emissions and communicating reliable findings will be essential to preventing further exposure and restoring confidence.
